I wouldn't say it's common knowledge, but it's actually pretty easy to figure out once you know the science behind why some of a chicken (or other bird) is white meat and some of it is dark.
The drumsticks on a chicken are dark because they are the hardest working parts of the bird. The leg muscles (and that's what the meat on a drumstick is) have to support the weight of the bird and be strong enough for the chicken to be able to run around all day long. Because of that, these muscles naturally produce a protein called myoglobin, which gives the muscle endurance. It also gives dark meat its color and some of its taste.
The white meat on a chicken comes from the parts that don't have to work as hard. Because chickens spend most of their time on the ground, the wings and breast meat doesn't develop myoglobin and thus stay light. In birds that fly for long periods of time, such as ducks and geese, these parts are "dark meat" as well.
Hope this explains it a little!
