I do it all the time. All you have to do is ask.

People who just accept the status quo automatically assume they can't customize their order. The thing is, you're the paying customer so if you don't want pickles or you want extra pickles, all you have to do is ask and 9 times out of 10 they will do it.

Two basic reasons.

First because originally you couldn't, although the menu was so simple that there really wasn't much need or desire to customize. The food was already being prepared before it was ordered as part of the "Speede Service System" so customizing would slow things down.

Then Burger King showed up on the scene and their big hook was that the food may not come out quite as fast but you could "have it your way". Eventually, along with the expansion of the menu, McDonald's did start to customize but they've never really made a big deal about it. Even In-N-Out's "Secret Menu" is more well advertised that the McDonald's willingness to add lettuce and "Special Sauce" to a McDouble or other such custom jobs.

So I guess the short answer is simply, a lack of advertising.

Listen Burger King advertises the fact that you can customize. McDonald's never has. That tells you that McDonald's doesn't appreciate a great deal of customization. McDonald's is automated and Burger King is less automated, that is what the marketing books say.

I wasn't aware that people thought otherwise. Really you can customize an order anywhere...

Why does it matter? You can customize an order anywhere you go.

I don't know a single person who thinks you can't customize your order. Anyone with the ability to think and reason already knows you can.
